About the Ketogenic Diet The Ketogenic Diet (or keto diet) is a high fat, low carbohydrate diet that in medicine is used primarily to treat difficult-to-control (refractory) epilepsy in children. The keto diet forces the body to burn fats rather than carbohydrates, making it a diet commonly used for weight loss, and reduction of body fat. Normally, the carbohydrates contained in food are converted into glucose, which is then transported around the body and is particularly important in fueling brain-function. However, if there are insufficient carbohydrates in the diet, the liver converts fat into fatty acids and ketone bodies. The ketone bodies pass into the brain and replace glucose as an energy source. An elevated level of ketone bodies in the blood, a state known as ketosis, has been shown to cause a reduction in the frequency of epileptic seizures as well as help manage symptoms of type 2 diabetes. Keto diets and other low carb high fat (lchf) diets such as the atkins diet have also shown promise in reducing symptoms of type 2 diabetes since eating excess carbohydrates causes blood glucose levels to spike. By reducing carbohydrate intake and switching the focus to fat, some people experience reduced blood sugar. Ketosis is a metabolic state in which some of the body's energy supply comes from ketone bodies in the blood, in contrast to a state of glycolysis in which blood glucose provides most of the energy. Ketosis is a nutritional process characterised by serum concentrations of ketone bodies over 0.5 mM, with low and stable levels of insulin and blood glucose. It is almost always generalized with hyperketonemia, that is, an elevated level of ketone bodies in the blood throughout the body. Ketone bodies are formed by ketogenesis when liver glycogen stores are depleted (or from metabolising medium-chain triglycerides). DISCLAIMER: We do not perform any testing ourselves.
